Helping With Dyslexia
Dyslexia is defined by the International Dyslexia Association (2000) as a "language-based disability in which a person has trouble understanding words, sentences or paragraphs; both oral and written language are affected." An earlier definition, formulated by a dyslexia research committee with the National Institutes of Health added that the disorder was "characterized by difficulties in single word decoding, usually reflecting insufficient phonological processing abilities" that are "often unexpected in relation to age and other cognitive and academic abilities" (Shaywitz, Fletcher & Shaywitz, 1994).

As can be seen from the above definition, dyslexia is a language-based difficulty. Auditory/language processing issues relate to the ability of a person to understand, comprehend, utilize and remember what is heard, primarily language. Therefore, it is imperative to address auditory/language processing skills when working with those with dyslexia, as auditory/language issues are a major underlying cause. Students that are dyslexic may have difficulty sounding out words, or with comprehension while reading, or both. The therapies we utilize in our clinic effectively address these areas. For those that are out of town, our itegrated listening system home unit and our e-book- Beyond Tutoring: Strategies to Improve Reading, Spelling, Comprehension and Memory, are valuable resources for treating this disorder. Please see www.clearpathways.org for more information on these products.

Words cannot adequately express our great joy over what you have accomplished with our daughter in 15 weeks time. The results are nothing short of miraculous. She was reading picture books at the second grade level and is now reading chapter books at the fourth grade level. She has made so many academic improvements and her countenance has completely changed. She is now socializing with everyone - adults, teens and small children. She has become outgoing and finally believes she is smart. And best of all ....she is smiling! Janel, thank you for sharing your talents and your beautiful heart with my daughter and our family.
