frequently asked questions

What is the process?
The initial assessment generally takes about one hour, and a follow-up appointment is then scheduled to discuss test results. A full written report is available two weeks after testing. The assessment will determine if a person is a good candidate for treatment. The program can be completed in 30 sessions for most people, although occasionally some clients with severe issues may benefit from more. The sessions are 60 minutes in length and clients are seen twice weekly.

What age range do you work with?
We see clients ages 3 through adult, although the typical age for our clients is generally 5 through 19. There is not an age limit in regard to adults and many people in their 60's have seen significant improvement.

Can you work with people that are out of town?
Yes. Please click here to see the page for out of town treatment.

How long will it take to benefit?
Most people see improvements from about three quarters of the way through the end of the program. However, some people start to see improvements after one session. This is not typical but it does occur. Some have not seen any noticeable improvement until a month or more after completion of the program, but this is also rare. Often the initial signs of improvement appear to be very subtle and some people think a child may just be maturing. However, typically the subtleties build until significant improvement is very apparent.

The benefits of the program tend to continue one year post treatment. We call this the "catch up year" as most of our clients continue to make steady gains for up to a year after completing treatment.

What kind of improvements occur with this program?
The improvements that people have reported are many and varied. Some of the improvements that have been reported are: attention, focus, listening, reading, spelling, math, writing, memory, comprehension, speech, balance, sports performance, creativity, musical ability, auditory/language processing, sensory processing, hearing perception, stress reduction, energy level, organizational skills, eye contact, social skills and ability to multi-task.

What kind of music is used during the Integrated Listening System Treatment?
Research has demonstrated that Mozart is universally accepted and has the best therapeutic results. The music is filtered and enhanced and does not sound exactly like music typically played on a CD player or ipod. Gregorian Chant is utilized because it has a very calming effect on people who are anxious or hyperactive. In addition, the vowels are elongated which leaves an adequate amount of time to perceive them clearly. This aids children with auditory processing and/or speech problems to improve their speech.

Is there research on the Integrated Listening System Program?
Research for the integrated listening system program can be found on the iLS website – www.integratedlistening.com.

Does medical insurance cover the cost of therapy?
Some of our clients are covered for our services under speech therapy. We provide the CPT and ICD-9 codes on our statements so our clients can submit to their own insurance companies. Our clients pay us for our services and are reimbursed by their insurance company. Also, our services are applicable for a medical services savings account.
