Signs of hearing problems in children
Sometimes people believe their child has a hearing problem when in fact the issues may result from an auditory/language processing disorder. Some of the symptoms between these two issues overlap. Children with processing issues may have difficulty discriminating sounds in words which leads to misinterpretation of verbal information and the need to have verbal information repeated. It may seem as if they are having trouble hearing when they are actually having trouble discriminating what they have heard.

In otherwords, the brain adequately hears the loudness of the information but is not always able to correctly perceive the exact sounds or words that were heard. They may hear "Get out your pook" instead of "Get out your book" which can be confusing for children, and may be interpreted as a hearing problem by the adults around them. Students with this issue often have to work two to three times harder to understand what is being said around them, which can be tiring and lead to attention problems and decreased listening skills.

It is important to have the hearing checked to rule out the possibility of a hearing loss, but it is also important for children that exhibit the above symptoms to have their auditory/language processing skills assessed as well.

Thank you so much!! My son went from hitting himself for being stupid in the 6th grade two years ago after doing poorly on a spelling test, to becoming a straight A student who attends to his homework and responsibilities at home happily (most of the time) his fall term of 8th grade. My son's future has never looked brighter!!
